InSpec for Windows Version 1.XX
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current version of InSpec for Windows 1.XX?

The current version is 1.70.

How do I get an update of InSpec for Windows 1.XX?

Contact your local dealer or Micro-Vu at support@microvu.com.

What operating system can I use with my 1.XX system?

Windows NT or 95. Window NT is recommended because it is a true 32-bit operating system, whereas Windows 95 isn't. Windows NT is much more stable and is more efficient at managing multiple processes (threads).

InSpec 1.XX does not run on Windows 2000 but 2.XX will run on Windows 2000. Contact your local dealer or Micro-Vu for details about upgrading.

Windows 95 is reporting that my framegrabber is conflicting with other components in my system. Why?

This message is normal and is due to a Windows 95 driver problem. Consider upgrading to Windows NT or InSpec 2.XX.

Why did InSpec stop working after I configured the computer for my network?

Improper network installation and configuration are a very common cause of computer problems. Micro-Vu strong recommends purchasing your computer with a network card from Micro-Vu. Micro-Vu now pre-installs network cards.

Before installing a network card, make sure that Plug-n-Play is disabled in the BIOS settings. Do not load the BIOS defaults. After installing a network card in the computer, but before installing any drivers, test InSpec to make sure it works. While installing drivers, install a minimal configuration with just TCP/IP and no DHCP or WINS services. Test InSpec again. Now configure for your network and re-test InSpec. If InSpec becomes problematic at this point, the network configuration is incompatible.

Why did InSpec stop working after I reinstalled Windows NT?

The likely cause is that files on the installation CD are out of date. Install the current Service Pack to update drivers. You can obtain the most current Service Pack from Microsoft.

Another cause is incorrect network installation or configuration. Install NT without networking and test InSpec before continuing.

On Qubix and Quantum systems, the game port joystick driver should be installed. This driver is located on the Windows NT CD-ROM. After installing it, you must install the most current Service Pack.

You must always install the Service Pack after any time you have put the original Windows NT CD-ROM in the drive to install file!!!

Why did InSpec stop working after installing a service pack?

You may have installed an old service pack. The Service Pack CD-ROM shipped with your computer is likely out of date. Obtain the most current Service Pack from Microsoft. There may be a Service Pack located in C:\sp.\update.

InSpec for DOS Versions 1.07- 2.15
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current version of InSpec for DOS?

The current version is 2.15

InSpec of DOS asks me to press a key, but does nothing when I do so?

InSpec asks the user to press a key in a pop-up message such as "Setup target and press a key". The user presses a key and nothing happens. The solution is usually to press either the Enter key or the Spacebar. InSpec is apparently waiting one of these specific keys at this message.

Why does a white area appear behind the mouse sometimes?

We have seen this occur while running InSpec for DOS under Windows 95 and 98 when newer mouse drivers are used. If this is very objectionable, using an older mouse driver may solve the problem. Be advised that older drivers may also cause system instabilities. Old drivers are not available from Micro-Vu but may be available from hardware manufacturers such as Microsoft. Several shareware mouse drivers are available on the Internet.

Q-16 Metrology Box
Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my printer work with the Q16's print port?

Most likely, your printer has a parallel interface. This is the most common interface for use with PC's. The Q16's Print port is an RS-232 interface. While printers with RS-232 interfaces are not as popular for PC's, they are available in many small sizes and shapes and have other advantages. For example they can be located over 50 feet from the Q16 for remote printing.

My printer is a RS-232 printer. Why is in not working?

Typically the problem is either the cable or the BAUD rate setting. Most printer connections require a null-modem cable. Refer to the Q16 manual and addendum (blue) for information on the proper cable and BAUD settings. Also note the information on handshaking. Follow the steps in the manual addendum for turning the RTS function off.

What is the difference between the Print port and the Xmit port?

Both ports are RS-232 ports. The Print port formats data so it looks "pretty" on a printer. The XMIT (short for transmit) port, uses a special message format that makes it easy for computer to accept the measurements.

How can I send the information from the Q16 to my computer?

The Q16 can usually be connected with a standard, straight-through serial cable. Most Statistical Process Control (SPC) programs accept information from the Q16. Use a program like TalTech's "Software Wedge for Windows" to get the data into most popular spreadsheets and programs. You can also use a terminal program like "HyperTerminal" or a DNC package to read information.
